Strobe String

In this activity, a strobe light allows visitors to "freeze" the action of a rotating string and see how things move in waves. The visitor can create different visual patterns [one, two and three-node sine waves or chaotic motion] by adjusting the frequency of strobe flashes, the tension of the string or the rotation speed. Because strobes are commonly used in industry to test moving motors, fans and other devices, this exhibit provides an excellent platform for staff-led demonstrations and programs about the everyday uses of technology.
